24 hours of Stevie → 3am: “If anyone had a chance to make something happen it was Stevie, who was clearly hurt by what had happened in the first half. Nine minutes into the second half, Stevie threw us a lifeline. Bombing forward, he met Riise’s cross on the move and headed into the far right corner of the Milan net. An inspirational captain had written the first paragraph of history. Stevie ran back to the centre circle with such a look of determination on his face.
His arms were flailing like a rampant butterfly as he surged every one of us to find something extra within ourselves. We surged forward from the kickoff and within two minutes Vladimir Smicer, who was on for Harry Kewell, hit a speculative shot. Dida got a hand to it but fumbled it into the net. This was incredible. We were now within one goal of pulling back what had seemed like an impossible deficit only eleven minutes ago…” - Didi Hamann on Stevie’s inspirational goal during the 2005 CL Final.
